If you are a history buff, you will
enjoy learning about the town’s origins during the Gold Rush Era. It was
started in 1848 by brothers John and Daniel Murphy. Some of the town’s original
buildings are still in operation, like the Murphys Historic Hotel and Lodge. It
earned a registered historic landmark designation because of the significant
figures who once visited it, including Mark Twain and General Ulysses S. Grant.
